NEET Seats in India

How many seats actually exist, where they are, and how the split between government and private colleges changes the rank you need.

In short

Seats are counted per state, and split between government and private colleges. The government share is what most aspirants are competing for — it is smaller, cheaper, and closes at a far better rank.

The tables below give MBBS and BDS intake state by state, plus the AIIMS institutions counted separately.

AIIMS seats are filled through the same NEET merit list and MCC counselling, but they sit outside the state-quota arithmetic — which is why they close at the sharpest ranks in the country. See the closing ranks.

How to read this #

A big state total is not the same as a good chance.

Two numbers matter more than the headline: the government share, because private fees put those seats out of reach for many, and the 85/15 split, because only 15% of government seats go to the All India Quota. The other 85% are reserved for candidates who satisfy that state’s domicile rules.

So a state with 5,000 seats may offer very few that you can actually compete for from outside it. Read the government column, then apply the quota split, then check the closing rank.

Frequently asked #

How many MBBS seats are there in India?
The tables above give the last published intake by state and union territory, split between government and private colleges. Totals change each cycle as new colleges are approved.
What is the difference between government and private seats?
Fees, mainly — and consequently the rank at which each closes. Government seats are far cheaper and close at much better ranks; private and deemed seats close far deeper, often under management or NRI quotas.
What is the 85/15 split?
15% of government college seats go to the All India Quota, open to candidates from anywhere. The remaining 85% are state quota, generally restricted to candidates who meet that state's domicile requirements.
Are AIIMS seats part of the state totals?
No. AIIMS institutions are counted separately and filled through MCC counselling from the same NEET merit list.
